Multiple approaches and tools can be used to develop a robust understanding of restraint system performance, injury mechanisms and countermeasures.

OCCUPANT PROTECTION

Identifying and implementing or improving existing maxims of good occupant restraint can take the form of many creative and novel designs.

Applying knowledge of damaging deformations of biological tissue due to mechanical impacts which have both physical and physiological effects uncovers opportunities for interventions.

These principles can be applied broadly to many modes of transportation and industries including automotive, military, spaceflight and sports.

TESTING & ANALYSIS

Many tools are available to study occupant protection and mitigation strategies.  Physical testing can include quasi-static and/or dynamic tests on either individual parts, sub-assemblies or full scale exemplars.

Anthropomorphic test devices (ATD) and numerical model simulations can also be used to make assessments.

Each of these tools has benefits and limitations regarding their value for assessing an injury mechanism, quantifying an impact response, comprehending impact tolerance or analyzing mitigation strategies.

INJURY INVESTIGATION

Applying a methodical and systematic analysis of an event identifies relationships between loading conditions and injury.

Investigations can include reviewing medical records, inspecting vehicles, equipment or sites and examining any other available information.

These findings provide a basis for determining important factors which influence injury.
